This is the most frequently asked question by users. So, in this blog, I will share 8 important things that you should immediately do after installing WordPress.
Just after installing WordPress, First, you should change general Settings which include Site Title, Tagline, User Registration option, and Timezone. Simply click on settings then click on general.
Site Title and Tagline: This should be such that it tells about your website, as it will appear in the Google search results.
In my case, the site title is wpguide and the tagline for my website is “Just read it”.
Time Zone-Now, Scroll down to the TimeZone and select your country time. By doing this you can plan your Posts as indicated by your Timezone.
Membership- Here Anyone can register means- any guest user can share their content on your website. If you don’t want this, don’t click on the box “Anyone can register”. I would like to suggest for now.
2. Media Settings
When will you upload an image for content, by default, WordPress creates multiple sizes for uploaded images. Because of this, WordPress will create unnecessary files on your website or blog. So, basically, this is not good practice.
And frankly, I also didn’t know about this. Once I just was reading a blog on things after installing WordPress, somewhere I found this recommendation for media settings. When I applied this on my website, I got the results.
So I will suggest you too for making this media set.
3. Configure Permalinks
Permalinks are one of the most important things. It’s permanent URLs of the content which you publish on your website.
WordPress, by default, provides a permalink something like this: http://localhost/wpguide/?p=123
The default permalink is sort but it is not searched engine friendly. To make it search engine friendly, Go to Settings and Click on the Permalinks option. Select the post name and save changes.
Imp note: Once you select permalinks then never Change your permalinks settings because it can seriously impact your search engine visibility. On a local server, you can do but it should almost never be done on a live website. So, after installing WordPress, you must care about this.
4.Delete dummy Post, Pages & Comments
When you install WordPress, you will see some default content like a default Page, a default Post, and a default Comment. So first delete these default content.
To delete the sample post, simply go to the Posts » All Posts page. Now move your mouse to the ‘Hello World’ post and then click on the ‘Trash’ link.
Now, You have to delete sample pages and comments. For this, click on the page, select trash, and then click on Apply.
Next to delete dummy comments, click on comment, and then choose the trash option.
5.Delete Default WordPress Themes
When you installed WordPress, you will find some default themes. First, delete those themes and add new themes and decide which theme is best for you. When you selected the one theme on which you want to work. Then delete the rest of the themes. Because even inactive themes need updates. So this is not good practice.
For starting, I recommend you start with Astra or WPocen theme. Both are free and best.
Now, Go to Appearance >> Theme page and then click on ADD NEW to search for a new theme.
Once you selected the theme, click on Activate.
Now, click on other themes that are unused, move your cursor to the right bottom corner, and then select Delete.
6. Delete Default Plugin and Install New one
WordPress is basically for a blogging website, everything you need for blogging, you can do it easily. But if you want to add modification, customization, or enhancement to your WordPress blog or site. Then you will need Plugins.
The plugin is a program, or set of one or more functions written in PHP language which allows you to add extra features to your site such as to sell product cart system, payment system. So, First, delete the Default plugin Hello.
